Eastern European skater vibes spill into Spacycloud’s new downstairs bar, which opened December 9. Bartender Luis Aliaga’s cocktail list features Eastern European spirits from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Russia. A strudel-inspired cocktail mixes potato vodka with apple brandy, apple sous, honey syrup, lemon, rosewater, and egg white powder before the glass gets a coating of sugar and cinnamon around the rim. Dinner is still confined to the upstairs space, but there are a few snacks like apple strudel, potatoes, and yuca fries. Colorful accents and Eastern European art make for an immersive background next to the live music from Eastern European musicians humming within the space. v

Now Kolina is going all in by converting the downstairs space into a distinct new bar. sPACy Tea and Cocktail Lounge, opening Dec. 9, is appointed with Eastern European art and will feature live musicians from the region to create what she calls a cultural hub.

Walking into the downstairs lounge and bar area is like stepping into another world where art, skateboarding and food all intersect. The walls are adorned with colorful abstract pieces of African art, often depicting women and elephants, for their strength. The lounge is furnished with velvet couches and chairs ranging in colors from cream to purple to dusty orange and vibrant painted pink walls, a sharp contrast to the dark, earthy and underground feel of the bar and upstairs area.

When Tatiana Kolina was growing up in Leningrad in the ’70s and ’80s, rebellious teens didn’t have access to the skating culture that was starting to take off among their American counterparts. Instead, Kolina and her cohort pushed against societal strictures by peddling Levi’s and other black-market goods on the street. Decades later, she’s still selling stuff—only now she owns a store in Adams Morgan and is one of DC’s top advocates for skateboarding.

This vegan hangout/skate shop in Adams Morgan serves a believable “fish and chips” built with vegan fillets and peasant potatoes. Russian native Maria Brezinsky also makes a mean black bean burger and grilled veggie sausage topped with curry ketchup. Snag a seat here. The sustainability-centric small business was just picked to collaborate on a new Vans shoe and T-shirt line.

Today, 18th Street in Adams Morgan remains the centerpiece of the neighborhood, retaining its hallmark artistic edge first established five decades ago. Tattoo parlors, palm readers, eclectic bars and alternative-style businesses line the street and after 10 p.m. you can find the sidewalks packed with people venturing out to enjoy them.

sPACYcLOUd Lounge in Adams Morgan started accepting Bitcoin and 35 other cryptocurrencies a week ago. “I know that cryptocurrency is the future as many people and companies are trying to get away from government-regulated banks,” says owner Tatiana “Tati” Kolina. She uses Coinbase, which doesn’t integrate into the restaurant’s POS system. She’s looking for a plug-in. “Right now we’re just going to use the wallet on iPhones,” she says.

The best part about the hippie bar and vegetarian restaurant is that when you descend the stairs you can take a trip to myriad destinations. Toss back a few Latvian beers, swirl goblets of Georgian amber wine, or board an imaginary flight to the other side of the world—Polynesia and Melanesia—where kava is most enthusiastically consumed, sometimes ceremonially.

D.C.’s newest street wear store / skate shop / restaurant is open for business on 18th Street. When we wrote about sPACYcLOUD for our Your Best August feature we weren’t entirely sure what to say because we didn’t know what sPACYcLOUD was going to be. Now we can confidently tell you it’s the only place in the city where you can get delicious food, buy killer clothes and skate to your hearts content at the same damn time.

They kicked off their opening with a ton of cool people doing kick flips inside and ended it with a traditional Filipino Kamayan dinner. We can’t wait to see what they do next.
